Around the Gate

MOROCCO, 2018 – This is the border is between Morocco and the Spanish enclave Ceuta. The photograph is from a series which provides a transversal and suspended interpretation of the border area which is both complex and intense, marked by a complete loss of bearings, and a space overrun with madness which becomes more and more globalised.

Here is known as a site of congestion. Thousands of people cross this frontier every day carrying enormous packages of goods on their back. There are often deaths during the crossing from being trampled upon. The image was taken on a public holiday during the celebration of San Antonio and so the area is deserted as bodies fade away and the architectural elements engage the viewer in an imaginary, wandering journey.

This series is in connection with a film that I’ve made with smugglers working around this border titled Bab Sebta.
