MORROCCO, 2015 – Thousands of impoverished Moroccan people illegally cross the border into Ceuta (Spain) each day to purchase manufactured goods. Nabila and Keltoum are among these women that smuggle goods from Ceuta to supply the Moroccan market mostly with tax- free goods such as Chinese-made clothing, household items, cosmetics, and foodstuffs.
I lived with Nabila and Keltoum for several weeks, becoming integrated with their families and sharing their daily struggles.
Referring to them by name and having them engage with the viewer gives Nabila and Keltoum agency and portrays them as strong, powerful women.
